This was my first Usenet post and my first contact with furry fandom. It blew my mind to find it and confirm that I had been a furry for almost a year longer than I originally thought. (I always used my FurryMUCK creation date before)

It's incredible how much has happened in the past 25 years. This post predates Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Livejournal even. The web was still a brand new thing and most people didn't use it yet, making the Internet mostly text-only. People still used slow modems to get online for the most part.

I don't even know if this response is going to work; I figured I'd just try for shits and giggles. Oh, and by the way, Fifi is still awesome. :)

Amazing! :D How did you find that old post?
Sometimes I think, what if the web never advanced into what we have now,
with all that animations, reactive websites and so on? I've to admit,
when I first encountered the Internet, everything was already starting
to become what it is now, no modems and not everything text-only. But I
imagine it to be pretty cool back then, connecting via modem to another
mailbox close to you... (For the info, I was born in 1997)

A lot of searching and pouring through groups. I remembered that I was on Usenet in the mid-90s, so I started searching for my name in the groups. Google Groups search function is lousy, though, so it only worked about halfway. Eventually I found some posts I made in alt.tv.animaniacs and I found the E-mail address I was posting from at the time. Based on that I was able to search backwards until I found this post.

And yeah, it was convoluted back then! I didn't have an ISP, so to get online I had to dial a terminal server at my local university, then connect from there to a UNIX system at another university, and from there to "Cybernet" which was a free BBS that had Usenet access. From there I started reading Usenet and made my first post about a subject I was passionate about.

When other people started responding and I realized they loved this stuff as much as me, it was then that I knew I found my "tribe," and here I am still a furry 25 freaking years later.

Your story fills me with glee. Thanks for sharing it.

Sounds pretty difficult but also cool once you could get onto Usenet.
^_^ Do you know if it worked via UUCP back then? (found an amateur radio
project on github recently, somebody made a set of software to use your
soundcard as an UUCP modem, heh)

I was born in 1988, but I never used Usenet until a few months ago. And
I really like it. It's convenient, easy to use, and uncluttered.
(Except for spam, but in a lot of groups [like this one] there's more
content than spam.) I don't see why people can't just use this more.
It's nice.

I like voregotten realms more than furrymuck because it supports color
and the programs seem more advanced. Though furrymuck always has online
players
